Chapter 30: Juliet

Christmas eve was like any other day for Juliet and her mother. They didn't celebrate with gifts, and there was no other family to spend it with. So she tried not to expect anything too different with her father, since he wasn't the mushy type.

Before the fight with Myreen, Juliet had looked forward to spending that day with her, excited to celebrate and exchange gifts. Now she only wanted to do what she always did: nothing. The Hallmark channel would be blowing up with a marathon, which she wanted to indulge in, but because of the hole she’d dug herself in, she couldn't do that. Not all day, anyway.

Juliet knew from the moment she woke that her heart wasn't into the idea of going on a date with Jesse. Sure, he was cute in a rugged kind of way, but he seemed rowdy and temperamental. And more temper was not what she needed.

She kept her morning clear so she could watch two movies before her date. And a gift arrived from Kenzie, a cute necklace that helped to cheer her just a little. But the short confrontation she’d had with Myreen played over and over in her mind, causing her mood to sour. Why did Myreen have to get in her head like that?

Obviously, she only asked Jesse out because Nik was watching. And it was clear that Jesse was not the right guy for Juliet. But her emotions had gotten the best of her, and she’d acted on impulse. Although, she was kind of proud that she’d reacted that way, rather than accidentally starting a fire.

All Nik had to do was acknowledge that she was there. Even a wave would have sufficed. Instead, he’d ignored her, and now she had to get ready for a date that she didn't want to go on. She wasn't ready for that yet. What annoyed her most was that Myreen knew just how much she wasn't ready.

For only a second, Juliet wished that she wasn't in the stupid fight with Myreen. She could really use a friend. But then, she could easily picture Kol asking Myreen to be his girlfriend, and as much as she wanted to be happy for her friend, she was more envious in the end. Myreen knew that as well. Juliet couldn't believe it was so easy for Myreen to tell her about Kol. As if that was going to help the situation at all.

Even still, she believed it was mostly Nik’s fault. If only he hadn’t broken up with her, everything could still be the way it was. Part of her knew she shouldn't blame Nik for the way things turned out, but she was cranky. She tried to center her mind on all things positive. It helped a little, but she still wished things were different.

The Hallmark movies did nothing to keep her mind off the drama in her life, and she wished she’d gone to the Defense Room instead. She looked at the clock, but she she’d have to start getting ready for her date.
